The benefits of ayurveda were known from the very ancient, nearly from the time it has been known. But recently ayurvedic dresses have came into lime light. It has been popular with the name ‘Ayurvastra’, which is basically uniquely weaved ayurvedic dyed dresses manufactured in Kerala's Balaramapuram area.

It has been particularly popular among people suffering from hypertension. It is being sold in the form of kurtas, salwar suits, bedcovers, pillow covers and night gowns. Clothes are dyed with the essence of the herbs and include medicinal properties of neem, tulsi, sida and turmeric.

It has been said that these clothes will be beneficial to patients suffering from blood pressure, diabetes, rheumatism and skin diseases, besides providing a cooling effect.

These clothes have been successfully undergone clinical trials in Balaramapuram, the Government Ayurveda College in Thiruvananthapuram.

Basically the roots, flowers, leaves, seeds and barks of around 200 herbs are used to make the dyes. The cloth material is mostly cotton and silk though there are a few sample pieces in wool and jute too.
